Eastern Equine Encephalitis is also known as EEE Virus is a severe infection that can be fatal. Incidents have been reported in the past when not only animals but humans die of this infection as well. Apart from COVID, we have several viruses, we should protect ourselves from. Along with COVID cleaning and infection prevention, it is important to protect against other viral infections such as EEE which cause deaths in horses and humans.
Although the EEE virus is rare, it can become a potentially life-threatening infection. Communities living in the countryside are at greater risk of getting the infection. The high-risk virus, is transmitted through mosquito bites. According to the Centre for Disease Control, around 30 percent of people who contract the EEE infection die from brain damage. While the case is rare and in reported cases annually only seven cases of EEE infection are reported.
The disease spreads from mosquito bites, so to avoid catching EEE, communities living in high-risk areas should continue using mosquito repellants and should stay indoors to limit exposure to be bitten by mosquitoes at all.
Symptoms and Deaths in Humans
The symptoms of EEE infection can start from the first day of infection and can take up to 7 days to appear. An EEE infection has symptoms of fever, chills, malaise, arthralgia, and myalgia.
Other symptoms noticed in the patients of this infection include headache, vomiting, diarrhea, seizures, behavioral changes, drowsiness, and even coma. The infection can affect the central nervous system and results in the loss of brain function in around one-third of the patients. The person suffering from the EEE infection can recover in 1-2 weeks if the central nervous system is not infected.
Infection prevention by staying indoors and keeping doors and windows closed from dusk till dawn is the best way to protect against EEE.
Deaths in Horses
The horses are bitten by an infected mosquito bite seldom survive the EEE infection. The mosquito bites are prevalent in livestock especially horses because horses live in stables where infection prevention is poor. Due to irregular cleaning and lack of resources and enclosures to limit mosquito’s growth near stables, horses can be at extremely high risk of death.
The spread from one to the other with the same mosquito’s bites can make it very difficult to protect the rest of the livestock. For infection prevention, the mosquitoes should be kept away through cleaning and killing the mosquitoes inside the barns and in the proximity of the barn with a powerful chemical.
Prevention from EEE Virus
As the virus spreads through mosquito bites, halting the population of mosquitoes in your area can effectively reduce the risks associated with mosquito bites. The virus is rare but it exists and can cause deaths in horses at an unprecedented level once spread.
Infection prevention for the EEE virus requires spraying a powerful formula in the air that kills mosquitoes and is also safe for the environment, livestock, and the local population. Mosquitoes are pests and even if they are not carrying a disease, they should be killed because there is no other way to spot them from biting.
Other ways of controlling mosquitoes are letting the spider webs and lizards grow and stay around the barns. Because they feed on mosquitoes, you won’t have to care about them all the time. However, this is not as effective as a proper repellent.
Cleaning of Horses Stables
Other ways to keep mosquitoes off your property is to install large nets around in open spots at barns and windows etc. to stop them from entering.
Diseases caused by mosquitoes include malaria, dengue, West Nile virus, chikungunya, yellow fever, filariasis, tularemia, dirofilariasis, Japanese encephalitis, St Louis’ encephalitis, Western equine encephalitis, Eastern equine encephalitis, Venezuelan equine encephalitis, ross river fever, Barmah forest fever, and the list goes on and on.
Viral diseases and infections caused by mosquitoes can be deadly and in no circumstances, you should allow any near you, your family, and pets or livestock.
